Do you find there’s always something that you procrastinate over? What’s your thing? Is it creative stuff you don’t have time for or is it boring time-consuming stuff that numbs your brain?
Procrastination is quite a buzz word these days, and many of us experience it at some point. Whether we have ADHD (where it is positively compounded) or are simply overwhelmed with the current pace of life and how much we need to do just to manage our day-to-day commitments, procrastination can be a pain in the *** .
We can try to understand it of course, but this takes some work, so it depends how much time you have. The time you have available might be limited if you tend to procrastinate. It can be a vicious cycle. It also depends on how your brain works as to whether you are interested or can even be bothered to understand it. Personally, I love to try to understand these things, which is why I am writing about it. Suffice to say, we are all different, but the Art of Procrastination links many of us together.
A few supportive ideas for you, should you be inclined to read on:
– Take a good look at your schedule & try to allocate specific times to carry out specific tasks. Use time blocking, colour coding, and all those fun things. Just don’t start procrastinating over it.
– Make a to-do list & track the status of each task.
– Break down your tasks into simpler steps so that you are not overwhelmed.
-Take regular breaks if you find you lose focus easily. Try meditation & yoga.
– Set stronger boundaries. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted (This one is difficult for me! My brain loves a distraction).
-Go back to basics. Look at your diary and oust everything in there that is not essential. Make yourself available for that essential task ONLY until it is done. You will feel lighter and more productive once it’s off your shoulders.
If any of the following apply to you then it’s probably time to look at outsourcing:
-You already know which tasks you tend to procrastinate over.
-You know why you are procrastinating over them.
-You strongly feel that you will be unable to complete them for whatever reason.
